CEMIC

  CHRONOLOGY  

1958
CEMIC, a non-profit organization aimed at the well- being of the community, is founded by the inspiration of Dr. Norberto Quirno (1904-1972), and its first headquarters
are located at the XX ward of Hospital Rivadavia in Buenos Aires, Argentina. At the same time, a long-lasting and fruitful relationship with the University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine is started.

1962
The Buenos Aires City Charity decided to build a Teaching Hospital at Av. Galván 4102 in the neighborhood of Saavedra thanks to a legacy from Miss Sofía Díaz de Vivar. CEMIC was entrusted with the technical management of the building.

1963
A "Pilot Center" is organized in the aforementioned teaching ward. (Decree signed by President Illia).

1964
CEMIC acquires the premises at Sánchez de Bustamante 2560, which are currently used as Faculty House, the Health Care System offices and the “Kellog USA Foundation”.

1965
The foundation stone of the future Teaching Hospital is placed in the neighborhood of Saavedra, in a 7-acre property granted by the Buenos Aires City Town Hall, today’s University Hospital at Saavedra headquarters.

A “Pilot Center for Community Medical Care” is born (related to the Ministry of Health) based on the above mentioned “Pilot Center”.

1966
CEMIC is gradually organized as a hospital and as a health care system supported by a medical insurance organization.

1967
The future Saavedra Teaching Hospital is partially opened. It consists of 15 modern consulting rooms, a pharmacy, a biochemistry laboratory, a radiology ward and a physical therapy department. Chronic hemodialysis for renal patients is first provided as a treatment.

1970
The Center for Research on Experimental Human Reproduction (in Spanish CIRHE), which includes an animal laboratory with monkeys, is opened in the future Teaching Hospital.

The first renal transplantation is performed in Las Heras University Hospital, which contributes to teaching and research at CEMIC.

1972
CEMIC becomes one of the Hospital Teaching Units of University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine.

1977
The "Norberto Quirno" Foundation is created with the aim of supporting education and research at CEMIC.

1979
The national government grants CEMIC full permission to use the building located on the corner of Las Heras and S. de Bustamante. This building was already a Pilot Center for Community Medical Care and was related to the Ministry of Public Health.

"The Buenos Aires Program" is created at Saavedra University Hospital, with the implementation of the concept "Quality Control in the Clinical Laboratory ".

1980
CEMIC acquires a 9000 square meter property at Av. E. Galván 4102, for the building of its University Hospital.

1982
The new architectural plan for the Teaching Hospital that will function as a University Hospital at Saavedra headquarters is approved. The first phase of the building is started.

1985
In memory of Otto E. Bemberg and Sofía B. de Bemberg, their family donates the building at Talcahuano 1234 to the Norberto Quirno Foundation, which currently has its headquarters in this place.

This building becomes a new Outpatient Medical Center.

1988
The number of research projects rises to 196.

1990
The Department of Research and Rehabilitation of Neurological Patients (in Spanish SIREN) is opened.

1992
Belgrano Outpatient Medical Center, at Sucre 2245 Buenos Aires, is opened.

Acassuso Outpatient Medical Center, at Manzone 823 Acassuso, Buenos Aires, is opened.

CEMIC is designated as Affiliated Hospital to the University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine.

The former Hospital Rivadavia is nowadays Las Heras University Hospital.

1993
CEMIC is chosen by the UBA School of Medicine as one of the units where its Plan B for the medical curriculum will be launched. Thus, CEMIC commits itself to teaching the whole curriculum (since the first year) at its own expense and in its own buildings.
CEMIC Professional Nursing School is reopened.

1994
The second building stage of the future Teaching Hospital at Saavedra headquarters is started.

The first optician’s is opened at Talcahuano 1279, Recoleta, Buenos Aires.

1995
The first facility of the Teaching Hospital is fitted out with a general ward with 12 beds and an operating room in today’s University Hospital at Saavedra heaquarters.

CEMIC opens its new kidney-pancreas transplant unit at Las Heras University Hospital.

CEMIC acquires the premises at Billinghurst 2447, where the Department of Pathology and the laboratory are moved.

New consulting rooms are opened at Sánchez de Bustamante 2520, Buenos Aires.

1996
A new bone marrow Transplant Unit is opened at Saavedra University Hospital.

Las Heras University Hospital is fitted out with advanced medical equipment.

New consulting rooms are opened in a 400 m2 building owned by CEMIC at Las Heras 2867, Buenos Aires.

Belgrano Medical Center is moved to a larger building at José Hernández 2268, Buenos Aires.

A building located at Las Heras 2939 is bought and remodelled to be opened as administrative Headquarters.

CEMIC chorus, which represents us in all cultural activities, is created.

1997
The Instituto Universitario CEMIC, IUC (CEMIC University Institute), is created, which will grant degrees in the graduate medical curriculum and in postgraduate medical careers.

1998
The IUC starts working. Medicine and six specialties are taught: Family Practice, Orthopedics and Traumatology, Pathology, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Pediatrics. Graduates are given University Specialist degrees, which are accepted nationwide.

Acassuso Medical Center is moved to J.J. Díaz 857, San Isidro, Province of Buenos Aires. This new outpatient clinic has been a donation performed by the René Baron Foundation, whose name was given to the center.

A new facility where samples for analysis are obtained and received is created at Tagle 2525, Buenos Aires.

A charter service linking both headquarters of the University Hospital - Las Heras and Saavedra - is available for our professionals, staff, affiliate members and patients.

Monserrat Medical Center, located at Hipólito Yrigoyen 1210, Buenos Aires, is opened.

CEMIC is awarded the 1998 Platinum Konex Prize, and is recognized as one of the best scientific and technological institutions over the last 10 years.

CEMIC Health Consulting starts its activities.

1999
Medical Urology and Internal Medicine are included as postgraduate specialties. The first year of the graduate medical curriculum is launched at the Instituto Universitario CEMIC (IUC) at Saavedra headquarters. New laboratories and a computer room are added to the IUC facilities.

The first admission building of the University Hospital at Saavedra headquarters is finished. The Maternity Ward (13 beds), the Nursery and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (8 cribs) are opened on the second floor. On the third floor, there are 12 beds for the general ward and 4 beds for the Adult Intensive Care Unit; on the first floor, there are four operating rooms, a recovery room, a delivery room, two labor rooms and a sterilization center on the technical floor.

2000
Caballito Medical Center, located at Av. Rivadavia 6044, Buenos Aires, is opened.

The IUC incorporates Nephrology as a specialization course.

Dr. René Baron Research Unit is opened.

The last biennial research survey revealed a scientific production including 219 papers and 290 presentations.

2001
A Dialysis Center is opened at Saavedra University Hospital. It consists of 24 hemodialysis places in each shift and a subsection for outpatient continuous peritoneal dialysis. This department becomes a referral center in our country.

The Pathology and Biochemistry Laboratory fitted out with modern technology is moved to a 1000m2 floor at Saavedra University Hospital, thus ceasing its activities at Billinghurst 2447.

Several of CEMIC almost 300 biomedical research papers receive national and international prizes. In the 1998-2000 biennial period, 219 papers are published and 290 papers are presented in national and international congresses, where 535 investigators participate.

Our second optician’s is opened in the neighborhood of Belgrano.
An orthopedic shop is opened at Caballito Medical Center to provide assistance for our patients.

The CONEAU authorizes the Instituto Universitario CEMIC Medical Curriculum.
Twenty-eight postgraduate refresher courses are given.

Dante, the first baby operated in utero is born on July 26 at CEMIC Medical Center. This is the first in utero procedure performed outside the United States.

2002
The National Academy of Medicine grants CEMIC the commodatum of the Instituto Hermenegilda Pombo de Rodríguez, located at Av. Coronel Díaz 2423, Buenos Aires.

CEMIC opens a new outpatient medical center.

The IUC inaugurates the new IUC President Headquarters and the Students Library at Av. E. Galván 4180, opposite the University Hospital.

Two new classrooms are built on the first floor at Saavedra University Hospital.

Both CEMIC and the IUC have signed 21 academic cooperation agreements with national and international institutions.

Under Regulation N° 220, dated 05/15/02 and issued by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the IUC is authorized to create the Academic Unit - Research Institute. This Institute will operate at Saavedra University Hospital.

The Biochemistry laboratory that works at Saavedra University Hospital, achieves the ISO 9002 certification, provided by TÚV Reheinland/Berlín- Brandenburg.

2003
At Saavedra University Hospital a new area is inaugurated aiming at assisting medical emergencies round the clock. This area has 400 m2 including five consulting rooms, three observation beds, a plaster and multiple procedure room with separated waiting areas for adults and children, and a Day Care Center for oncological patients, with three armchairs and two beds.

A new unit of Pediatric Admission is opened, which includes five general admission beds and 5 critical care beds.

A new high-tech helicoidal scanner is installed at the Imaging Department.

The ITAES (Spanish for: “Technical Institute of Health Enterprises Accreditation) gives credit to the above mentioned Hospital.

CEMIC is appointed to organize the First International Congress of Virology to take place in Argentina. The Congress was sponsored by the Panamerican Society for Clinical Virology (USA), the National Academy of Medicine and the Panamerican Health Association.

“The Buenos Aires program” achieves the ISO 9001 certification, provided by TÚV Reheinland/Berlín- Brandenburg.

2004
On the occasion of its 45th anniversary, the opening of the new facilities is carried out with the presence of Dr. Anibal Ibarra (BA highest authority), Dr. Roberto Lavagna (Economy Minister), Dr. Guillermo Jaim Echeverry (UBA President), Dr. Alfredo Stern (BA Health Secretary), members of the National Academy of Medicine and the CONICET, and CEMIC authorities and collaborators.

A new area of 800 m2, which will be used as new Coronary Care and Hemodynamic Units, is inaugurated. The Coronary Care Unit consists in eight single rooms with private toilets, a nursing area which has direct contact with patients and central monitoring technology, a physician room where the doctor on duty can stay round the clock. The Hemodynamic Department includes a procedure and recovery area, which allows up to 4 patients, a technical area and a physician room.

CEMIC purchases a property in Valdenegro 4329 street, near Saavedra headquarters in the near future, where some supporting areas of the university hospital will be working.

2005

The University Hospital at Saavedra Headquarters is certified under ISO 14001-2004 standard regulations by the Certifying Agency TÜV Rheinland Argentina S.A. – Rheinland Grup. Thus, CEMIC becomes the first hospital in our country certified under these regulations.

2006
Dentistry and Medical Traumatology Emergency Departments are incorporated to the University Hospital at Saavedra Headquarters round the clock.

2007
In October, a state-of-the-art medical device in MRI was first used in CEMIC Saavedra University Hospital. Thus, CEMIC takes the lead in imaging studies.

On October 11, CEMIC was appointed as a Unit to the National Council of Scientific and Technological Research, CONICET.

On December 6th, the Instituto Universitario CEMIC, IUC, (CEMIC University Institute), celebrated its 10th Anniversary.

2008
On April 14th, the new branch Belgrano Medical Center started working. It is located in "3 de Febrero" street of the Belgrano district in the City of Buenos Aires.

In May, the Rodriguez Peña Medical Center was opened.  It is situated in "Rodriguez Pena 1046" street in the City of Buenos Aires.

On July 24th the PET CT service was inaugurated at Saavedra University Hospital. It is a last generation tomography, unique in its type in all Latin America.

On September 4th the first institutional tumorbank working at a general hospital was inaugurated at CEMIC Saavedra University Hospital.

In order to celebrate CEMIC Fiftieth Anniversary, several academic, scientific and social ceremonies were performed throughout the year, concluding on Nov 26th with a celebration gathering all those people who are, or were involved with the institution.
